St Julians School

Year 9 Options Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Your child is at an exciting point in their education.  Year 9  students now have the chance to make important choices regarding their future.  They will be given the opportunity to choose subjects they wish to study throughout Year 10 and Year 11 (Key Stage 4).

In previous years we have hosted an evening for students and their parents to come into school to meet with their advisor and select their options. However, due to the pandemic, we are unable to host such an event. In addition, as the school is currently closed, this process will now need to be carried out remotely.

Between Monday 18th and Wednesday 20th January, you will be contacted by your child’s Pathways Advisor via telephone. The Pathways Advisor is a member of staff who will act as a mentor and guide to your child and yourself throughout this process.  They will advise your son/daughter on the most suitable route to take throughout Key Stage 4.

During this initial telephone call, your Pathways Advisor will explain more about the options booklet (being posted home shortly) and how to access other information resources on  the school’s website.  An online meeting/second telephone conversation will also be set up for the following week (25th - 29th January) when you and your child can discuss and confirm their option subject choices.

It is essential that students pick the subjects they are most likely to be successful in so that they achieve their best possible qualifications. To help your son/daughter pick the right subjects, please refer to their school report which will be sent home along with the letter and the options booklet. It’s also important to ensure that these subjects support their future plans and will keep them engaged throughout Key Stage 4. Information on careers and the courses students need to take for a particular career can be found on www.careerswales.com.

On the reverse of the letter you will receive will be the option subjects available to your child and instructions regarding how to complete the form. Please make sure you have this completed form available during the second meeting.

Once we have collated  the options choices of all the students in Year 9, we will then begin to allocate them to courses. Please be mindful that some subjects may not run if there is minimal uptake.  Students will be informed of their KS4 courses in May.

If you have any questions about the process please feel free to contact your child’s Pathways Advisor.

Yours faithfully,

Miss S Hook
